Complex redevelopment of the Market Square, the new seat of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the International Congress Centre, comprehensive modernisation of the sports and entertainment arena “Spodek”, reconstruction of the railway station and high class office facilities are only a few selected projects in the transformation of central Katowice. These investments, with a total value exceeding one billion zlotys were presented on the conference held on 12 May 2010 devoted to the investment potential of Katowice.

The conference, organized by the City Hall of Katowice and the American Chamber of Commerce in Poland took place in the newly opened hotel Angelo in Katowice. Invited quests, among them local authorities, potential investors, representatives of companies already present in the city , IBM Managers – members of the IBM Executive Service Corps programme as well as journalists had an opportunity to see new commercial investments and plans for further city development to be started in the next few months.

Katowice is facing one of the biggest transformations of the city centre in this part of Europe. Investments which will be carried out in the years to come will not only change the way Katowice and its region is perceived but they will also make it possible to better utilise the potential of the capital of the biggest urban agglomeration in Poland. And I mean not only by residents but also by businesspeople. We want Katowice to become a strong business centre in southern Poland – says Piotr Uszok, the Mayor of the City of Katowice.

The most important investments was discussed by conference speakers.

After a short period of recession the commercial real estate market in Katowice is experiencing a phase of growth again. New office buildings, hotels and retail spaces are being built. Neinver’s investment in the redevelopment of the railway station and building a shopping arcade and an office building in the new complex, Immoeast’s plans for the extension of Silesia City Center, Ghelamco, GTC and Reinhold’s office investments as well as new hotels – Angelo and Best Western – show that investors positively perceive the absorption capacity of the Katowice agglomeration and its development perspectives. Rising interest of prospective tenants in Katowice is also slowly becoming noticeable. If it translates into transactions it may positively influence the engagement of other property developers in office projects in Katowice – says Tomasz Buras, Director of Office Spaces Department at King Sturge.

The development strategy of Katowice is valuable for private investors who enhanced by new plans show more interest to the city and decide to locate their investments here.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is increasing its engagement in Poland by opening its Shared Service Centre in Katowice, employing 250 people. The centre will support the activities of PwC in auditing, providing services for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. We have chosen Katowice because we highly value the potential of the local labour market and the quality of human capital. We also notice that the city cares about new investments – says Adam Żołnowski, Assistant Director in Advisory at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The choice of Katowice for the seat of a shared service centre of such a reputable consulting companies is the best evidence of the increasing potential of the city and a signal for prospective investors that it is worth to open outsourcing centres here – says Mateusz Skowroński, Katowice Mayor’s Plenipotentiary for Contacts with Strategic Investors.

The conference concerning Katowice’s investment potential is not the only initiative aimed at drawing the attention of investors to the biggest Polish urban agglomeration.

We really care about investments from the SSC/BPO/ITO/R&D sectors so together with the Trade and Investment Section of the Polish Consulate General in New York, Katowice Special Economic Zone and Silesian University of Technology we will take part in the Global Sourcing Forum Conference and Global Showcase. In October we will participate also in the International Commercial Property Exposition EXPO REAL in Munich – adds Mateusz Skowroński.

Investment promotion of Katowice worldwide, especially in United States can be fruitful for setting up new investments.

I try to attract to the Zone investors not only from the automotive sector but also service centres. In these activities, I appreciate cooperation with the Municipality of Katowice, which actively strives to attract investors from the BPO, ITO, SSC and R&D sectors. Together with the Municipality of Katowice, we will participate in the October outsourcing forum in New York” – says Piotr Wojaczek, President of the Katowice Special Economic Zone.

American capital is present in Poland – 20 mld USD of investments during past 20 years. Many of the them are located in Silesian region.

Katowice is developing very fast. Many investors will focus on this region mainly because high qualified human resources. American investors are willing to invest here and I hope for dense cooperation between polish and american enterpreneurs after the mission – pointed out Windham Loopesko from W.E. Loopesko & Associates, INC, who has announced economic Mission from Colorado to Katowice in September 2010.
